In Catalonia the forests blend with the Mediterranean Sea
Thousands of people are being affected by this misfortune. Many families living in rural areas have had to be evacuated to urban centers far from the flames. Light and telephone connections have been lost in many towns making communication and rescue efforts difficult.

The ecological disaster is alarming. The fire has already affected some 13,000 hectares of vegetation and remains uncontrolled due in part to the difficulties added by the strong tramontana, a wind characteristic of this area of Catalonia that can sometimes be violent and of great intensity.

As usual, firefighters have become true heroes. These beings that seem made of another paste, have come to the affected area from all parts of Catalonia willing to leave their lives if necessary to combat this bastard and devastating fire. Firemen, those men.

Thousands of volunteers They are also fighting these fires that seem to be the most serious of the last decades. Thousands of people, firefighters, air forces, fighting against flames that do not understand mercy.

The worst of all is that the fires could have been caused by imprudence. Some sources indicate that the fire could have occurred due to a poorly extinguished butt. Really, if the hypothesis is confirmed, I can't believe it.

I grew up in Catalonia and from a very young age I remember campaigns in all the media with the intention of raising awareness about the population fire hazards during summer time. In these days that we live, times of communication, times of waves of information, after decades insisting on the dangers that stifling heat and strong winds can pose to forests, How is it possible that there is a fire caused by a badly extinguished butt?If the suspicions are confirmed, I'm really not going to fit in my outrage.

I just want to take advantage of this sad moment to remind you how important it is travel with prudence, solidarity and responsibility. Not only with oneself but with the environment and the people who inhabit the places we visit. I know you always do, but a reminder never hurts, both for you and for myself.

Today, despite being physically in Dublin, my heart and my mind are in Catalonia. A lot of strength and a lot of encouragement to all these people who are being affected by these damn fires. All my energy will cross Europe to meet them.

Força catalans, força Catalunya!
